What's on your mind?

I want to be able to answer my readers questions. I know you are out there, I hear from you! So, please, if there are any suggestions you have, any questions, anything you want to know about making this journey we call law school----ask me.

I feel so blessed to be on this road and I want to pay it forward. The most valuable tool you have, is the wisdom of those who have walked the path before you.......

Hello,

I found your blog a while ago when I googled "single mom law school" in hopes of finding single moms that were going through an experience I am hoping to go through soon. I am also a single mother and preparing to apply to law school in Nov 2011. I'm so glad that I found your blog and can see how single moms handle all that they have on their plate. You have achieved a great accomplishment and I hope for the best for you.

My daughter is 1.5 and I am finishing up my bachelor's degree right now while studying and working. Hopefully, I will also be where you are in a few years. =)

Hi Jen! Thanks for the good wishes. The journey is a good one, even if it feels long.

Keep at it, work hard, and you will be here too before you know it. Thanks for posting that you read my blog. I like knowing that it is helping some out there. When I started researching school, there was nothing out there. And it seemed so daunting. I want those thinking about law school, to know you can do it!

Lots of people ask me: how do you do it? How do you attend law school and raise a child alone? My answer is simply that you prioritize. You approach school as an 8 to 5 job. I take Friday evenings and Saturday's off. Study a bit on Sundays. For me this works. It means not being a part of the "social" things at school, and that time between your classes is in the library studying. But that's okay. You will have different goals then the students who are single with no children.

How do you afford it? Student loans........yes, you heard me. My reasoning is that my earning capacity will double, but likely triple, which means that I can afford to take on the debt to pay for a better future for my daughter and I.

Does you daughter resent you studying? No. Sometimes she gets frustrated, but she really does understand the bigger picture. She is my biggest supporter. I have learned to include her by taking her to class with me when I can, by having her help me study with flash cards, and by taking her to appropriate events at school. In fact, I did an incoming student panel one year, and the administration of the school had her speak as well. We are a team, and that includes this journey.
